With over a century of service, Tuffnell Plumbing Drainage & Gas has built a legacy of reliability and superior workmanship. Originally family-owned by the Tuffnell family until 2007, and then by the Harris family from 2007 to 2017, the company has continually evolved to incorporate the latest technologies and practices.
We continue to grow with the industry while staying true to the values that shaped our name. Our focus remains on delivering trusted, professional plumbing, gasfitting, and drainage services backed by proven experience and up-to-date methods.

Chris Downey
Managing Director
Chris holds the highest qualifications available in New Zealand’s plumbing industry. He is a Certifying Plumber, Gasfitter, and Drainlayer, with additional credentials including an IQP Backflow Protection Licence and a Limited Electrical Licence. As a member of the Master Plumbers Association of NZ, he ensures all work meets the highest industry standards.
With over 23 years of experience in plumbing and civil construction, Chris is committed to quality workmanship and training the next generation of tradespeople. He fosters a supportive environment for apprentices and tradesmen to grow their skills across all areas of the industry. Every project completed by his team is built to code and completed to a high standard.
He’s also a proud supporter of the NZ Warriors — up the Wahs!
Jed Smith
Plumbing Manager
Jed brings over 25 years of experience across plumbing, gas, and renewable technologies. Originally from the UK, he trained through a traditional apprenticeship and went on to qualify in underfloor heating, central heating design, biomass systems, heat pumps, and solar technology.
He previously ran his own plumbing company before moving into teaching and assessing apprentices. Jed also holds an MBA in Business, a Diploma in Business Consultancy, and a PRINCE2 Project Management qualification. His combined experience in plumbing and business management drives his focus on customer service and sustainable growth.
John Richards
Drainage Manager
John has more than 18 years of experience in both private and civil drainage. He holds a drainage licence from the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board of NZ and has completed a comprehensive NZQA Business Management course.
John has worked on everything from domestic drainage and septic systems to wastewater treatment and city network maintenance. He leads his team with energy, humour, and a strong focus on safety and results. His leadership supports a positive work culture and consistently delivers reliable outcomes for clients.
